Level 1 Class Descriptions
During the first semester we read one book each class day. We will discuss literary elements and lessons to be learned from each book. The second semester we will read a longer chapter book and then discuss.
Our art projects vary and usually connect with our science, literature or the season.
For level 1 history we will use Abeka's Our America. Students will gain a greater interest in and love for their country as they learn about the people who helped to make it the great land that it is today. Students will be challenged by a heritage of faith and character, as well as the story of God's grace and guidance found in America's history.
We use Masterbooks, God's Design for Life for beginners. It includes age appropriate activities, worksheets, Scripture learning, writing practice and more. The class is designed to help children understand creation from a solidly biblical basis.
Each week a new spelling list is given with a specific focus on building your child's spelling and reading ability.
We use Shurley English Grammar to help students become competent writers by understanding sentence structure. We incorporate jingles to help students learn the definitions for the eight parts of speech. These definitions help students learn the vocabulary necessary for understanding basic sentence structure. We will also use a specific and systematic question-and-answer flow to accurately label the eight parts of speech.
