Level 3 Class Descriptions
Grammar: This year we will be utilizing Fix It Grammar's Level 1 The Nose Tree. This book builds on basic grammar concepts. Students read about three brave soldiers, a whimsical dwarf, and a cunning princess in an adventure, where each daily passage reveals a new portion of the tale. As students hunt for and correct errors, they learn the basic parts of speech, end-mark punctuation, phrases, clauses, and homophones.
IEW: Fables, Myths, and Fairytales builds upon concepts introduced in level 2. IEW’s unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity. They will learn several structural models (note taking, stories, simple reports, etc.) to help them organize any type of composition. In this course students will learn 8 out of the 9 IEW units. Additionally, stylistic techniques (strong verbs, quality adjectives, etc) are taught incrementally to gently move students from the basics into more sophisticated writing. New clauses and sentence openers are also introduced in this level as part of the stylistic techniques.
Masterbooks God’s Design for the Physical World is a Christ-centered science curriculum that introduces students to the foundational principles of physical science while consistently pointing to God as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. It consists of: Machines and Motion, Heat and Energy, and Inventions and Technology.
The course is designed to help students understand how the physical world works-matter, motion, energy, forces, and simple machines-through hands-on learning and observation, while viewing scientific discovery through a biblical worldview.
In-class activities are completed each week to reinforce concepts and promote conceptual understanding through practical application. Worksheet questions and vocabulary study are issued on a weekly basis. A unit assessment is administered at the conclusion of each instructional unit and completed at home.
Using Story of the World Vol 3, this class will investigate the fascinating people and events of the Middle Ages, from the conquest of the New World to the California Gold Rush of 1849. History doesn’t happen in a vacuum; it happens in real places, so you will find lots and lots of maps in the history book.! This textbook will be used alongside student pages for a full year of history and geography, along with fun and engaging hands-on activities in class.
Students will be assigned an average of two chapters of reading, narration work, and map work each week. Students will also have the opportunity to discuss all they've learned each week with their peers in class and add layers to the learning with projects and activities.
*While this class mirrors the work assigned to Level 2 students, a Level 3 student will be assigned additional work at home in the form of reading comprehension questions as well as work to become independent at their own pace in managing their workload.
Over the course of the year, we will be alternating math and art!
For art, we will enjoy our class time learning about artists and art movements. We will also be creating art projects based on these artists as we chronologically work through an overview of art history.
For math, we will spend class time learning and reviewing math concepts that correlate to the students’ level they are in. Taking advantage of having a group of students, we will play various math games to practice math skills! Lessons will be short, interactive and educational. No homework will be given in this course.
Students will read a few chapters at home each week and complete questions that will aid in comprehension and thought provoking questions. In class, we will be discussing what we've read as we continue to develop reading comprehension skills. Additionally, we start to dig into more of the literature concepts and thoughts behind the writing. Students will be completing a book report project at home at the conclusion of each book. Students will present these in class to practice speaking in front of others.
