Level 4 Class Descriptions

Teacher: Melissa Cameron

IEW's unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity. Students will learn eight structural models to help them organize any type of composition. Additionally, stylistic techniques are taught incrementally to gently move students from the basics to more sophisticated writing. Curriculum for this class will be the Modern World-History Based Writing course from IEW.

Students can expect to complete one writing assignment weekly as well as learn vocabulary over the course of the year, all geared to improve their knowledge of modern times while learning to write with structure and style.

Masterbooks General Science 1: Survey of Earth and Sky introduce students to key concepts in earth and space science through a biblical, creation-centered perspective.

The course is structured into four units: oceans & marine science, astronomy, weather & meteorology, and minerals & earth materials, with one unit completed each academic quarter.

Worksheet assignments are distributed weekly for at-home completion. Quizzes are assigned for completion outside of class, and a cumulative assessment is administered at the conclusion of each unit.

Using Masterbook curriculum, The World's Story 3, students will be guided on a trip around the world as they study history from the Age of Explorers through the modern day and learn all about the wars, revolutions, and culture changes that defined these times. Throughout the course, students will see God's guiding hand through history and the growth of our world, from the first explorers to today’s modernized cultures.

They will discover Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and others who sailed the earth’s oceans, visit the sites of major wars and revolutions, and trace the rise and fall of various nations.

Students can expect to complete weekly reading, question assignments, and map work at home and come prepared to discuss the material in class with their peers. Each student will also be assigned one presentation project during the year as well as a total of 4 tests over the course of the school year.

Level 4 Art History will utilize a chronological approach to learning, from Creation to Contemporary. Using a distinctively Christian overview, we will focus of art by Christians and about the Christian faith. We will be learning vocabulary, appreciating the history and creating art projects. From Veritas Press History of Art curriculum, “God made us creative and on Mount Sinai gave instructions on how to use art.

Virtually all cultures have made art, and that culture’s art reveals its hopes, dreams, and beliefs. Sometimes all we have of a past culture is its art. If you do an online search for the Italian Renaissance, much of it will be about the art. For nearly two thousand years, Christians have made art. Art educates and enriches faith. And by studying the art of the past, their hopes, dreams, and beliefs, we can learn something about ourselves in the present.”

This literature class will focus on novel studies throughout the course of the year. Weekly reading assignments will correlate with comprehension assignments given to the student each week. We will be focusing on various genres as well as learning literary elements such as plot, character types, and literary devices. In class, we will spend time having literary discussions about the book we are reading and learn new literary techniques each week. We will study vocabulary drawn from each novel and will have activities and tests reviewing them. Occasionally there will be projects and creative writing assignments based on the novels which they will present in class to practice their public speaking skills.
